Dear beloved readers,
It would be a lie to say that it feels like yesterday when we last heard from our television best girlfriends, because it feels like fucking forever since Carrie Bradshaw wondered about anything while brightly shining in my screen. And boy, do I miss her.
After years of longing for more of Sex and the City, and finally getting to be actively a writer in the same lifetime as Carrie was the fulfillment of a dream I didn’t even know I had. And, you know, while And Just Like That… aired I didn’t hesitate when pointing out everything that was objectively wrong with the show, but as the last episode went live, I was also the first begging for a new season, claiming (with certainty and property) that a world without SATC is a world practically unlivable. These words remain true, but I think, and I need, to get deeper into my expectations for this new season, because well, it’s my birthright to discuss it.
Well, first of all, I am really excited to get back to my bullshit and weekly tune in the “Every Outfit” podcast! Chelsea and Lauren were my absolute besties during the last season of AJLT, you would be absolutely shattered to know that none of my friends, acquaintances, family members etc tuned in for a single episode. Tragic. So for that, I am thrilled!
Now, this is going to be delicate because, simply one of my favorite essayists, Samantha Irby, is a writer in the show, and Irby herself was one of the people who suggested the saddest TV death of all time to me. Because yes, I am still grieving Mr. Big, rightfully so! And I respect Irby so much to simply accept that for the show to have a plot, a point forward, they had to kill Big – seriously, he cannot abandon Carrie at the altar, or have Carrie cheating on him in the Middle East AGAIN! I used to be a fiction writer, I know sometimes drastic times call for drastic measures. But I can’t help but wonder: Did they fucking have to bring Aidan back?!?!?!?!?!?!
Pardon my French, but what the fuck?! I am not directly blaming on Irby, I doubt she’s much concerned about Carrie’s love life when Miranda’s is much more interesting, but every other writer who thought the way to go was to revive Aidan, and not only that, bring him back by having Carrie thirsty contacting him via email?! Am I to believe in this crap? Honestly, had them running into each other in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge, that would’ve made more sense.
Also, what’s the point of bringing Aidan, a past tense love? If we used the argument that there was nothing further of the Mr. Big chapter to be explored, then wouldn’t the same argument be valid for the very man Carrie cheated on Big with in the goddamn Middle East?! If the point of SATC, the series, was for Carrie to find the love of her life, and that journey involved already proving that this love wasn’t Aidan, but Big, then what is the point of bringing him back? To show that sometimes you gotta settle for the second best if the other one died?! Please, be serious.
I know you are currently wondering, that for someone who defended this shitshow as hard as I did, this may be the last straw I am willing to take. But wrong, beloved reader, very wrong. You see, the thing is, none of this matters, it doesn’t, and maybe a week ago it did a little bit, maybe it would inflict that I would come back here weekly a little more pissed than usual, but now, as of today, it doesn’t fucking matter for one very glorious, blonde, and sexual reason: Samantha Jones is back.
Period. I don’t have to say anything else.
I was talking to my husband about the latest developments on Jeopardy Masters (we were behind on the season, btw!) when I casually refreshed my Instagram feed. I gasped so loud my Big’s firs reaction was to ask who died. And just like that I read him out loud the words: “Kim Cattrall is returning as Samantha Jones to And Just Like That.” To which Big responded “What the fuck is ‘and Just like that’?” I know, I failed as a wife. But you see beloved readers, literally nothing matters, television is saved.
I know will you feel the need to burst my bubble and inform me that “it will only be one scene,” “she wasn’t even physically in the same space as the other girls,” “she won’t be back if there’s a third season.” Bla, bla, bla. You know what, I don’t give a flying fuck. From a marketing standpoint, this is one of the cleverest thing I’ve ever seen, specially considering how the rating went for last season, having Samantha coming back for one goddamn scene in the season finale no less?! Genius. Plus, considering how publicly Kim went to proclaim her lack of interest in the project, I know they are paying her the biggest of bucks, because yes, everyone has their price, and this fat check mother Cattrall is about to cash in will be worth it, and she knows there will be more from where it came from. So who is to say, really, a year ago this was a mystic dream that lived purely in the what ifs of my brain during REM stage, now this is fucking true, like actually happening.
I think there are few things in life that made me this happy. And my wedding day now may be the second best day I’ve ever lived. I cannot fucking wait to have them back, the four of them, in any way they could manage to fit them in my screen, and I will forever cherish this moment. In a few months, when I return here to report on this bombastic pop culture moment, that will hopefully live on in history as the best moment of our TV life, I hope I only have good things to say. And also like, is it too early to start campaigning for them to renew it for a third season?! What hashtag should we use?! Gosh, I am giddy with excitement!
Stay safe and out of trouble, beloved readers, but if you don’t – oh my god, tell me all about it.
